How it all ends: Risk Management Video 1 2 3

Notes (Video 1):
· How do you go making a decision without facing uncertainty?
· Telling you how to think
· “Manipulative”
· 1) Cant make the right choice
2) You have to chose
Answer: “Do the best you can with what you have”
· No certainty on climate change
· No matter how careful the population is, you will either overspend or under spend
· Risk Management: Used by government and industries (relieves you of the necessity of knowing things for certain, before making a decision)
· Gives oversight of the whole process
· Weigh the risks and costs and the society decides what to do
· Probability x Consequence

Part 1

Useful for climate change

At the start you can calucalte what do you expect of an action

Sense of consequences

Sense of probabilrty

Use expected value to find an idea what one can expect in the climate change.

Ist a prediction, not conjecture. Ist something that might happen. All about the probabilty, the highest expected value...

Dont only believe what people say/what one read. Take a step back and use the information to assess by oneself.

Given uncertainty, what is probably the most credible source?

(spectrum) based on 2 factors

Does the source know wat they are doing?

Are they are bias?

Connection to Copenhaguen:

Part 3

Looking at profesional organizationa. AAAS, who are not bias and said that climate change is a major issue.

American Association for the Advancement of Science

National Academy of Sciences

Publishers of Science, peer editing.

It is caused by humans, extreme weather etc. „The time to conrtol emissions is now“

NAS second professional scientist organization with G8 statement

Late action will incur greater cost. A bid to G8 leaders.

Firms, who have very high CO2 emissions actually said that they should make a law on CO2 emissions.

Contradiction in bias, because these companies sold their products with wrong advertisement campaigns. Since everyone knows about the problem now, the companies are going „greener“.

The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy Practice Plan

Plan for In-Class Commentary (only 60 minutes)

Introduction:
• Mention the book, Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, published in 1985.
• Mention the big theme (ex. The Probable of the Improbable) and the smaller themes that are referenced to. (ex. Importance of Humanity, Aliens rule)
• Mention that the themes are found by using motifs such as( the earth, mice,)
• And rhetorical devices such as ( Irony, Sarcasm ), Imagery (motifs) are used in service of the big theme

Context:
• Just before the cliff hanger in that episode
• Genre:
o Radio serial/episodes
o Science Fiction
o Absurdist
• Setting is on Magrethea, where Arthur Dent is about to learn that the earth was a giant computer, generated the ultimate question of life, the universe and everything, which was destroyed 5 minutes before it processed the question.

Paragraph 1:
• The Probable of the Improbable is the main theme, because everything that is mentioned highly Improbable to a human, but fits perfectly into the context of the passage.
• Therefore Absurdity drives the piece, due to the absurd statements such as (dolphins) are more intelligent.
• Irony also drives this passage, because since it is highly improbable, it is unexpected to happen, which results in an ironic atmosphere.

Paragraph 2:
• Themes such as “The importance of humanity” are referenced in different areas of the passage.
• This smaller theme is in service of the big theme.
• EX Dolphins are much more intelligent than humans. Absurd elements such as the playing and fooling in the water, emphasizes the “unimportance” of humanity. This ties directly to the main theme, since it is highly improbable that dolphins are more intelligent than humans.

Paragraph 3:
• There is a paradox, between the difference of intelligence of humans and dolphins and (… and mice are more intelligent than dolphins for the same reason)
• These qualities were brought about by listing (the wheel, New York…)

Paragraph 4:
• Characters Arthur Dent is an uncertain, nervous and mostly sarcastic, in order to blend his uncertainty out of play. (example “Oh”)
• He is just in complete panic, because he was abruptly put into a very new situation.
• Really, he is just in desperate need and search of a normal life (Symbol/Motif a cup of tea)

Conclusion:
• The big theme “The Probable of the Improbable” emphasized by smaller themes and characters.
• Motifs and literary devices are used in service of the big theme.

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy Plan + Paragraph (Very Sorry for the slight delay of the plan)

Plan for a Commentary of the Hitchhiker’s guide to the Galaxy

Introduction:

The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, is an amalgam of the genres of science fiction absurdist humour and radio serial. Firstly published in 1985, the episodic radio podcast was broadcast on a regular basis in the United Kingdom. Typical Codes were connected with science fiction conventions to create this unique genre. Many literary and humorous devices are used to create the absurdist atmosphere that makes the podcast humorous. With the help of common motifs and devices recognized in the passage on page 90 of the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, certain themes can be strengthened. Typical for this episodic radio show, the passage is read by a narrator, giving background and a cliff hanger from the previous episode. The specific passage is read and analyzed, in order to find the devices and motifs that are used in service of the theme.

Paragraph 1:

Each theme is a code combined with a science fiction convention, in order to result in an absurdist piece. Different humorous and literary devices are used in service of the theme. Letting the setting be a convention, space is a fundamental idea that connects with the idea of science fiction. The earth is the most important motif in this passage which is used in service of the theme; the importance of humanity. The passage is driven by biblical allusions such as “that… the universe … was created by some sort of God.”(p.90). Since humans, living on earth are probably the only one’s believing in God, it refers to both the motif, earth, and as a result leads into the theme as mentioned above. The statement is juxtaposed with the next sentence, having a change in tone which gives a negative response to the first statement. In addition, absurd and ironic elements are added to give the controversial idea a humorous effect.

Apparently “the universe was in fact sneezed out of the nose…”.

Theme: The importance of humanity
Motifs used in service of theme: earth,
Literary/humorous devices: Biblical Allusion, Juxtaposition, Irony, absurdity
Convention: Setting: Space

Paragraph 2:

Theme: Past + Present
Motifs used in service of the theme: earth
Literary Devices: Parallel Structure, historical allusion, biblical allusion, irony, absurdity

Paragraph 3:
Theme: 42
Motifs used in service of the theme: earth, deep thought, the ultimate question
Literary devices: Parallel Structure, absurdity, logical fallacy,

Paragraph 4:

Theme: The Probability of the Improbable/ paradox statement
Motifs used: earth
devices: irony, absurdity, foreshadowing

Conclusion:

Of the four mentioned themes, which were present in the passage, all were strengthened by the use of literary, humorous devices and motifs. In this passage, the earth was the most repeated motif, because it could be referred to the theme in every case. The frequent absurdity emphasizes the idea of this humorous, episodic radio show, and as a result used frequently. The use of irony is of equal and fundamental importance, because it emphasizes the unexpected in many cases, which then created the humor.
